Important information about surah Al-Kahf
Surah Al-Kahf in Arabic: الكهف is the 18th Surah of the Holy Quran, situated between juz 15 and 16, and it consists of 110 verses. Revealed during the Meccan period, this Surah carries deep spiritual lessons and timeless wisdom. Its name, meaning “The Cave”, is drawn from the remarkable story of a group of young believers who sought refuge in a cave and were miraculously protected by Allah for many years.
Why was surah al-kahf revealed?
Surah Al-Kahf was revealed after the people of Quraysh tried to test the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They went to the Jewish scholars in Medina and asked how they could check if Muhammad was truly a prophet. The scholars told them to ask him about three things: a group of young men who disappeared in the past, a man who traveled the world from east to west, and the reality of the soul. When the Prophet was asked, he said he would answer the next day and he forgot to say “In shaa’ Allah” (if Allah wills). Because of that, the revelation was delayed for several days, which made the Prophet worried. Then, Allah revealed Surah Al-Kahf with the answers to two of the questions (the story of the youths and the traveler (Dhul-Qarnayn) and taught the Prophet to always say “In shaa’ Allah” when speaking of the future. The third question, about the soul, was later answered in another Surah (Al-Isra).
